Our society held its season finale in early October. Not only was it the last outing of the year, with all the golfer of the year competitions still up for grabs but it was also our Captain’s Day hosted by Alan Loftus. There was a large turnout at the Slieve Russell to do battle on the occasion enjoying an unexpectedly dry days golfing. The main Captains Day prize itself was won by Martin Mc Gowan who posted his score early from the first group out which held on for the win. Colm Griffin won the Low category with Cyril Mc Keon a close second. In the High section, Paddy Beirne won out, while in the Ladies competition Breda Travers was the victor from Dolores Mulvey.

Other prizes on the day went to Brady Whyte for the leading Visitor, Niall Loftus won the Gross, Kealan Loftus the gent’s & Breda Travers the long drives. Breda also won the ladies nearest the pin while Martin Mc Gowan also won the men’s nearest the pin.

There was a very close run duel in the overall GOY competition with Shane Loftus only having one point to spare over Declan Loftus after the season’s seven outings. The other GOY competitions were captured by Breda Travers, Colm Griffin and Declan Loftus while Liam Loftus had nabbed the matchplay award in Sept.

All the awards for both the Captain’s Day and 2021 GOY’s were presented later in the evening in Monica’s Public House in Drumshanbo. A great night was had by all, with plenty of drinks on tap and food on plates, celebrating another successful year. Congratulations to our Captain, Alan Loftus, who while at the helm during 2020 & 2021 helped guide us safely through a pandemic. Hopefully the one and only Captain to have to do so.
