Last Saturday saw the societies third outing take place at Birr Golf Club. 22 players made their way to the Co. Offaly course with many looking forward to our first society visit to a course that had been reviewed as a  Hidden Gem.

On the day members played the winter course and unfortunately due to the lack of directional signage meant that a lot of the Tee boxes seemed Hidden too and causing confusion particularly on the earlier holes. This didn’t stop most enjoying what is a decent enough track,  particularly as the the weather on the day was beautiful.

It was great to see Vincent McMorrow in attendance after having to take time out recently after injuring his back, welcome back Vinnie!

Congratulations to overall Winner Niall Loftus for taking his first regular outing win with a great 41 points just beating Martin McGowan’s 40 points which landed him 1st prize in the High Handicap category with second spot in this section going to Alan Carty with his second 39 points in a row. Captain Maurice Cullen took the Low Handicap prize with an excellent 37 points. In the Ladies category Mary Lynch won 1st prize with 37 points, Marion Fahy’s 33 points won her 2nd prize . Front and back winners where Frank Mulvey with 23 on the front 9 and Kevin Daly’s 22 points on the back 9.

The presentation was held In Monica’s that evening with the 1st round of the Match Play draw taking place which resulted in the following pairings, Padraic McShera v Chris Fahy, Alan Carty v Danny Egan, Frank Mulvey v Maurice Cullen, Cyril Mckeon V Ray McNamara, Enda McNamara v Martin McGowan, Steve Stead v Enda McGloin, Declan Loftus v Marion Fahy, Kevin Cusack v Niall Loftus. First player drawn has choice of venue with full handicap differences to be used. Matches to be played before the next outing at Strandhill on May 26th with an 11.40 am Tee off.
